Artists Wanted: Zambian NGO Announces Search for Talented Young Illustrator
Lusaka
June 5, 2007
Zambian NGO “Treatment Advocacy & Literacy Campaign” (TALC) yesterday launched a K1.5 million competition to find an upcoming young Zambian artist who can provide illustrations for an exciting new Zambian book project. The forthcoming fictional book, My Mum Has HIV, will be a tool to help positive parents disclose their status to their children. The book is the work of HIV positive advocates who have come together to share their stories.
TALC announced that the illustration competition is open to all Zambians between the ages of 12 and 25. The winner will have their illustrations published in the book and walk away with a K1.5 million cash prize. Funding for the competition — and the book — is provided by the U.S. State Department, through a grant from the President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
“As a grassroots organization trying to empower people living with HIV, we wanted to provide the community with a useful book that can help positive parents talk about HIV in the home,” said TALC programs manager, Felix Mwanza. “At the same time, we thought the book provided an excellent opportunity to support and encourage a young Zambian artist who will have the chance to showcase their artistic talent and support this exciting project.”
To enter, all budding artists need to provide up to three samples of their work. Samples can be existing work or pieces created for the competition. Any pieces created for the competition should focus on HIV and Zambian family life. Artists will also need to complete a short declaration when they submit their work.
Submissions should be delivered to the TALC office, 1st Floor CUSA House,
