April 27, 2008. Lusaka.
LUSAKA — U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Dr. Jendayi Frazer today wrapped up a brief visit to Zambia that included meetings with President Levi Mwanawasa and selected cabinet officials. National Security Council Senior Director for African Affairs Bobby Pittman Jr. and U.S. Ambassador Carmen Martinez also attended the meetings, which focused on both bilateral and regional issues.
Dr. Frazer praised President Mwanawasa for his leadership in the region. She underscored the importance of regional stability and prosperity and urged SADC members to use their influence to reinforce democratic values and principles within the SADC region. She also commended SADC’s call for the immediate release of Zimbabwe’s electoral results, and for all parties there to accede to the will of the Zimbabwean people.
Dr. Frazer’s visit was part of a regional tour that included stops in South Africa and Angola.
Since her term as Assistant Secretary for African Affairs began in 2005, Dr. Frazer has traveled frequently in Africa, working closely on issues throughout the continent, including the crisis in Darfur and the post-election strife in Kenya. She is the former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa. This was Dr. Frazer’s first visit to Zambia.
