United States Government Donates to Zambia: Flood Disaster Response

May 14, 2008. Lusaka.

LUSAKA -- On Wednesday, May 14, 2008, the United States Government donated commodities worth $100,000 to Zambian relief efforts.  The U.S. donation came in response to the flood disaster appeal made by President Mwanawasa in January 2008.

During the 2007/08 rainy season, Zambia experienced flooding in many parts of the country.  Floods left thousands of people homeless with habitations, infrastructure and field crops damaged.

The donation of relief commodities to the GRZ will replenish the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit’s stock supplies and enhance its capacity for rapid response to future disasters.  The relief commodities consist of 5,000 blankets, 565 tarpaulins, 1,000 water buckets and containers, 1,000 sanitary towels, and an assortment of hand tools that includes wheelbarrows, shovels and hoes.

This donation is made on behalf of the United States people through USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA).
