LUSAKA – The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy on March 13, 2008 engaged over 40 pupils from three schools in commemorating the birthday of Dr. Suess, a celebrated American writer and cartoonist best known for his classic children's books.

The program kicked off a month-long program where the U.S. Embassy will visit 20 area schools to introduce students to Dr. Seuss, donate Seuss books and to talk about the importance of reading.  “We want to promote the idea that reading can be—should be—fun,” said Public Affairs Officer Christopher Wurst.  “Once children decide that reading is fun, they are headed in the right direction.” [...]

U.S Embassy Awards 12 Grants to Zambian Self-Help and Democracy and Human Rights Groups

Anti-Corruption Commission Unveils New Website, Encourages Corrupt Reporting

LUSAKA — Zambia’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) unveiled its new interactive website today, Thursday, April 24, 2008, and renewed calls for the public to become engaged in the fight against corruption. The new Website offers a new online, anonymous corruption reporting service, as well as tips and guidelines on how to avoid corruption and when accessing government services in Zambia.  ACC Director General Nixon Banda, joined by USAID Mission Director Melissa Williams, launched the site at the ACC’s offices today.  The ACC developed the website, www.acc.gov.zm with support from USAID and the Millennium Challenge Corporation through the Zambia Threshold Program. American Center Library to Open Huge Movie Archive to Zambian Public.

Local movie buffs now have an exciting new option: free movies at the American Center. On April 2, 2008, the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy opened its huge film archive to patrons of the Martin Luther King Jr. Library.  U.S. Ambassador Carmen Martinez officially introduced the film collection and a set of personal DVD players, as part of the library’s continuing attempt to connect Zambians with the best aspects of American culture.  Library patrons will be able to use the newly acquired portable DVD players and the rich archive of new and old American films at their leisure during library hours.  The film collection includes hundreds of award-winning feature films, documentaries, educational films and TV series.[...]
