Lusaka
May 07, 2007
LUSAKA -- U.S. Ambassador to Zambia Carmen Martinez will open an art exhibit on Wednesday, May 9, at 17:30 hrs at the American Center gallery, located in the COMESA Headquarters. The event is the result of a new initiative to support and nurture Zambian people’s abilities in creativity and the arts.
Sponsored by the U.S. Mission, the art exhibit was organized through the joint efforts of the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in conjunction with the Visual Arts Council of Zambia.
The exhibit, titled “Celebrating Contemporary Zambian Art,” has attracted 15 Zambian artists who have gained solid reputations, in Zambia and overseas, with indigenous and traditional work. The show features original artworks in mixed media, including watercolors, oils, acrylics and charcoal drawings. The selected pieces will depict day-to-day Zambian life with themes highlighting the work of USAID, in areas such as health, education, and economic growth.
Participating artists include: Patrick Mumba, Zenzele Chulu, Mulenga Chafilwa, Danny Luando, Linda Chandia, Mufiti Mushoke, Poto Kabwe, Raphael Chilufya, Charles Chambata, and Starry Mwaba.
After the Public Affairs Section’s special showing on May 9, the exhibit will be on view at the American Center until May 31. Admission is free.
