The Study of the United States Institutes
1. Call for Secondary School Educator Applicants for the FY–09 Summer
The U.S. Mission in Zambia is pleased to invite applicants for the Study of the United States Institutes for Secondary School Educators, to take place over the course of six (6) weeks beginning in mid-June 2009. Classroom teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers and Ministry of Education officials are eligible to apply for this program. Two institutes for secondary educators will be offered. One institute will take place at the Institute for Training and Development in Amherst, Massachusetts, and the second institute will take place at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The theme of the Institute is U.S. civilization. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of U.S. society, education and culture, past and present, with the goal of strengthening curricula and improving the quality of teaching about the United States in Zambia’s secondary schools.
Applicable candidates must:
- Be a Zambian citizen
- Speak English fluently
- Be a secondary school educator
- Be affiliated with an institution that guarantees a position upon completion of the program
- Have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree, i.e. degree from the University of Zambia or Copperbelt University
- Have high motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program and returning home
Preference will be given to those applicants who have not had extensive recent experience in the U.S.
Submit the following documents to the Cultural Affairs Assistant:
- A short, one-page personal statement indicating why you are interested in participating in the program and what you expect to gain from experience
- CV
- Certified copy of ID (passport or National registration card)
- Certified copies of certificate(s) and transcripts
- Two letters of reference, of which one should be from current employer
Preliminary applications must either be emailed to chilangwac@state.gov, or typed and submitted to the Cultural Affairs Assistant at the American Embassy no later than January 31, 2009. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
2. Call for Scholar Applicants for the FY–09 Summer
The U.S. Mission to Zambia is pleased to invite applicants for the Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI). SUSI comprises six post-graduate level academic programs with integrated study tours whose purpose is to provide foreign university faculty and other scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding of American society, culture and institutions. The ultimate goal is to strengthen curricula and to improve the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions abroad.
The scholar programs are scheduled to take place over the course of six (6) weeks beginning in mid-June 2009. A total of six institutes will be offered for university-level faculty: American Civilization; American Politics and Political Thought; Contemporary American Literature; U.S. Foreign Policy; Journalism and Media; and Religious Pluralism in the United States.
Applicable candidates must:
- Be a Zambian citizen
- Speak English fluently
- Be a highly motivated and experienced professional from an institution of higher education
- Be affiliated with an institution that guarantees a position upon completion of the program
- Have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree, i.e. a degree from the University of Zambia or Copperbelt University
- Have high motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program and returning home
