U.S. Embassy Lusaka Celebrates the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

United States Ambassador to Zambia, Carmen Martinez, on Thursday, January 12, 2006 officiated at the commemoration of the legacy of great African-American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. at the American Center in Lusaka. Zambia’s Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region, Ambassador Siteke Mwale was also in attendance.

Ambassador Martinez said that Martin Luther King, Jr. is known around the world for his contributions to changing American society and for his commitment to the universal ideals of freedom, democracy, and equality for all.

The program, which was attended by 50 secondary students from three secondary schools and journalists, involved a video show: “Martin Luther King, Jr.: The Man and the Dream” and a lecture on the Civil Rights Movement in America by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Zambia Senior Program Advisor, Gary Bricker, who is also a volunteer for the U.S. Embassy Lusaka Speakers’ Bureau.
