American Art Exhibition Opens at the Lusaka National Museum

Lusaka National Museum
June 22, 2005

U.S. Ambassador to Zambia Martin Brennan on June 22 opened an art exhibition at the Lusaka National Museum entitled: Two American Icons: Jacob Lawrence and Lois Mailou Jones.

The exhibition of 34 prints, which will be on display until June 30, 2005, demonstrates the rich and diverse contributions of African-American artists. The exhibition is open to the public from 09:00 – 16:30 each day and is free of charge.

Jacob Lawrence and Lois Mailou Jones are two of America’s best-know artists. Both African Americans, they made their mark on the American art scene in different ways and from different directions. Both shared a strong connection with Haiti, as well as with the Harlem Renaissance. Although their styles are markedly different, both artists were influenced by the world around them.

The goal of this exhibition is to increase international understanding through the arts. The Jacob Lawrence and Lois Mailou Jones prints are on loan from the estate collections of the two artists, both of whom are now deceased. Renowned Zambian artist Mr. William B. Miko serves as curator for the exhibit.
