United States Mission and Habitat for Humanity Build a Second "Friendship house"
LusakaNovember 18, 2005
Zambian and American staff from the U.S. Mission in Lusaka on
Friday, November 18, worked in partnership with Habitat for Humanity to
construct a second “Friendship House” for a needy Zambian family. In
October 2004, Mission employees and invited guests built the first
“Friendship House” in commemoration of Zambia’s 40th Independence Day.
Building a house with and for Zambians is a tangible way for the U.S.
Mission to demonstrate the continuing warm relationship between the
United States and Zambia.
A number of prominent Zambians,
including First Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, Minister of
Local Government and Housing, Honorable Andrew Mulenga, MP, Deputy
Minister of Defense Honorable Patricia Nawa, MP, Honorable Chance
Kabaghe, Area Member of Parliament for Matero Constituency, members of
government and civil society participated. The family that will own the
new house also took part in the construction.
Additionally, to
commemorate the contributions to Habitat for Humanity by former U.S.
Ambassador Martin Brennan and his family, attendees unveiled two
“Brennan Avenue” street signs at the Habitat for Humanity site. The
signs commemorate a farewell gift from U.S. Mission employees to
Habitat for Humanity in honor of Ambassador Brennan and his family, who
volunteered regularly to work at constructing houses at the Habitat for
Humanity site.
The house is being built at the Habitat for Humanity building site on the Great North road, opposite the SOS Children’s Village.
