World Cup Soccer Watching Party

The Embassy of the United States of America together with the Zambia Women Writers Association (ZAWWA) for the first time organized a World Cup Soccer Watching Party. The Soccer Party will combine the awarding of prizes to winners of a U.S. Embassy-sponsored essay competition on “The Role of Sport in Promoting Mutual Understanding” and the viewing of one of the soccer matches taking place in the second round of the ongoing 2006 FIFA World Cup tournament in Germany.
A Ten Million Nine Hundred Twenty Five Thousand Kwacha (K10,925,000) grant was given to the Zambia Women Writers Association (ZAWWA) by the Embassy of the United States of America for the essay competition.
The essay competition targeted youths who are members of sports academies and associations involved in the running of soccer in Zambia. The youths were invited to participate in the essay competition aimed at stressing the role that sport plays in promoting mutual understanding among nations of the world.
Youths from the sports academies and associations who participated in the essay competition, together with the some officials from their respective sports academies and associations will watch the first half of the soccer match. During halftime, the guests will witness the awards presentation ceremony to be presided upon by officials from the Ministry of Sport, Youth and Child Development, the Football Association of Zambia, and the U.S. Embassy.
The best three entries of the competition will be awarded cash prizes, with some consolation prizes for the next five best entries. After the prize giving ceremony, guests will continue watching the second half of the match, at the end of which they will be invited to view a paper show.
The World Cup Soccer Watching Party will be held at the American Center, COMESA Building.
